Local News in Brief : Slaying Suspect Caught
A man was fatally shot in a supermarket parking lot in Lynwood Wednesday afternoon when the victim apparently attempted to stop a robbery attempt by driving away from his assailant, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.
The 27-year-old victim, who died at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, was not identified pending notification of relatives.
Arturo Contreras, a security guard at an adjacent market, was alerted to the robbery and shooting by witnesses and chased and caught the suspect, Henry L. Peacock, 26, of Lynwood.
“I saw this man running away from the (victim’s) car,†Contreras, 26, said. “I saw he had a gun. I said, ‘I can’t let him go.’ So I ran after him. I knew I was taking a helluva chance, but I have a gun and a bullet-proof vest.â€
Contreras said he caught up with the gunman in the middle of nearby Long Beach Boulevard and pointed his revolver at him and said, ‘Please, don’t move.’ â€
The man froze and Contreras handcuffed him.
