As industry sources had predicted, IBM will acquire Pacific Telesis’ PacTel Spectrum Services unit for an undisclosed cash price. PacTel Spectrum, which helps pinpoint cause of transmission failure through remotely controlled test equipment located on the customer’s premises, will become a part of IBM’s national service division. For Pacific Telesis, the sale ends a 2- 1/2-year attempt to lure customers for the venture from among the proliferating number of companies using private voice-and-data networks.
