CAMPAIGN ’88 : Dukakis to Get Backing of N.J. Sen. Bradley
New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley, often mentioned as a possible dark-horse nominee if the Democratic convention is deadlocked, will endorse Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis’ presidential bid, campaign and Senate sources said Tuesday.
The two Democrats will announce the endorsement at a news conference in New Jersey today, the sources said. Both men’s offices confirmed they will attend the event in Jersey City.
Bradley, a former Rhodes scholar and pro-basketball star who is viewed as one of the Democratic Party’s rising stars, has said he is not ready to seek the presidency.
Bradley’s sought-after endorsement could bring Dukakis strong support in New Jersey’s June 7 primary election.
