In an effort to calm troubled waters, House Democratic leaders today accepted a GOP resolution admonishing them for shutting off the microphone on Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove) when he exceeded his allotted time for a speech on Central America.

The resolution, approved 381 to 0, calls on House Speaker Jim Wright (D-Tex.), “to ensure . . . that the audio and visual broadcast coverage of House proceedings not be interrupted.â€

“The problem with using the microphone as a weapon in debate is that it does not punish us, it punishes our constituents,†said Rep. Daniel E. Lungren (R-Long Beach).

House Democratic leader Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.) said Democrats had no objection to the resolution but added: “It is also incumbent on all members of the House to observe the rules of the House and to observe good order and decorum.â€
