Conflict in the Occupied Territories
I hope Israeli officials will heed the words of your excellent editorial. The television news and newspaper accounts of the treatment of Palestinians show acts of brutality when the Israeli soldiers are on their best behavior in front of the media. What about the times when the press is not present as in the case of the Palestinian youths being buried alive? Israeli authorities did not investigate until the story appeared in the papers.
How many atrocities, I wonder, occur out of the earshot of the reporters and out of camera range.
It is the presence of the press that keeps Israel from total barbarism.
