College Roundup : Seeburger’s 3 RBIs Pace UC Irvine to 13-3 Win

John Seeburger drove in three runs to lead UC Irvine to a 13-3 victory over Portland Thursday in a nonconference baseball game at Irvine.

Seeburger went 3 for 3, including a triple, to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Teammate Jeff Oberdank went 1 for 6, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. However, Oberdank’s multi-hit streak was ended at 11 games.

Irvine (15-11-1) took an early 1-0 lead as Seeburger singled home Al Rodriguez (4 for 4), who had doubled. Irvine made it 2-0 in the fourth as Rodriguez doubled home Jay Hawthorne, who had led off the inning with a walk.

The Anteaters broke the game open with a three-run fifth. After Stacy Parker reached base on an error, Seeburger tripled. Mike Goodcase then hit his second home run of the season.

Dean Douty pitched seven innings, allowing three unearned runs, for the victory. Douty (5-3) struck out seven.

Phil Geiskel (0-2) was the losing pitcher for Portland (5-7-1).

In men’s tennis:

Chapman 9, Cal State Los Angeles 0--Chapman, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, did not lose a set in sweeping its way to the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory at Los Angeles. The win was the fifth straight for Chapman (9-5, 7-0 in the CCAA). Miles Walker, the 32nd-ranked player in the intercollegiate poll, raised his record to 20-6 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Rich Sotelo in No. 1 singles.

In women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, North Carolina 4--Unranked UC Irvine (12-4) upset No. 24 North Carolina at Irvine in a match that went down to the No. 3 doubles match. The match was tied at three games each after singles, and then four games each after a split of doubles matches. Irvine’s Karin Bering and Kelly Goldsborough were extended to three sets in defeating North Carolina’s Valerie Farmer and Dianna McCarthy, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. Irvine’s Courtney Weichsel (ranked 67th in singles) upset Ann Stephenson (34th), 7-6, 7-5, and Kathy Rose and Stacey Cadigan also won in singles for Irvine.
