Chile Regime Extends Curbs on Civil Rights
SANTIAGO, Chile — The military government extended its special powers in Chile on Thursday, allowing it to restrict civil liberties, arrest opponents and curb freedom of the press for another six months.
The State of Danger of Disturbance of the Internal Peace, which has been in effect continuously since March, 1981, was renewed by a decree published Thursday in the Official Gazette.
The Catholic Church and the U.S. government have called on President Augusto Pinochet’s government to lift its discretionary powers and allow more political freedoms before the plebiscite in the last quarter of 1988.
