The Preps : Baseball : Lindberg Pitches One-Hitter
Senior left-hander Gary Lindberg pitched a one-hitter to lead Newport Harbor High School to 1-0 victory over Santa Ana Valley in a Newport Harbor baseball tournament game Wednesday at Newport Harbor.
Lindberg, who had 11 strikeouts and 3 walks, gave up a fifth-inning single. Newport Harbor (1-3) scored in the fifth when Zach Goemer walked and scored on a wild pitch.
In other Newport Harbor tournament games:
Costa Mesa 19, Woodbridge 9--Huy Kieu (3 for 6 with 5 RBIs), Justin Reyes (3 for 3 with 4 runs scored) and Shawn Leffingwell (3 for 4) led the Mustangs (3-1). Leffingwell, a junior, allowed 8 hits and struck out 3 in 4 innings. Woodbridge is 1-2.
Estancia 9, Santa Ana 2--Conrad Colby (1-0) gave up 4 hits and struck out 10 at Santa Ana. Colby went 3 for 3 with a double and 3 RBIs. The Eagles (4-0) were helped by Sean Nichols (2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs) and Mike Lewis (2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs).
Mater Dei 6, Rancho Alamitos 2--Joe Ciccarella had a two-run home run and Greg Shockey had a two-run double to lead the Monarchs (4-0) at home. Pete Keup (1-0) struck out seven and allowed one hit in four innings in relief of Scott Corliss, who allowed two hits. Rancho Alamitos is 1-1.
Orange 7, Corona del Mar 3--Brian Smith (1-0) allowed 8 hits and struck out 6 at Corona del Mar. Chris Modde had a double and two RBIs and Skip Tanner had three hits and stole two bases for Orange (1-3).
Foothill 4, Capistrano Valley 3--Kent Madole hit a two-run home run in the fourth to cap a three-run inning for Foothill (2-0) at Capistrano Valley.
Tustin 14, Saddleback 7--Monty Jones and Jason Labin each had 2 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored to lead the Tillers (1-1) at Foothill.
In the El Segundo tournament:
Westminster 8, Arcadia 4--Ryan Klesko hit a two-run home run in the third to lead the Lions (3-0) at Arcadia. Klesko (2-0), a junior, pitched the final four innings in relief.
Long Beach Poly 6, Edison 6 (9 innings, darkness)--Long Beach Poly advances in the winner’s bracket on total bases, 45-37. Josh Bammer hit 2 home runs and had 5 RBIs for Edison (1-1-1). Bammer has 4 home runs and 10 RBIs in three games this season.
In nonleague games:
Huntington Beach 6, Irvine 1--Huntington Beach’s Jerad Cawhorn went 3 for 3 with a double, a sacrifice fly and three runs scored to lead Huntington Beach at Irvine.
Troy 11, Garden Grove 7--Joe Schaeffer hit a home run and had four RBIs for host Troy (2-1). Rob Russell had three hits, including a home run, and Matt Carter had two hits, including a home run, for Troy. Steve Trachsel (2-0) pitched four innings of relief.
Miraleste 9, Brea-Olinda 8--Chris Benson hit a pair of two-run home runs for visiting Brea-Olinda.
