Boys’ Athletes of the Week : BASKETBALL
Jim Thompson, Madison High School boys’ basketball coach, has said that forward Robby Robinson doesn’t get involved enough in his team’s scoring.
Thanks to a little help from his teammates, Robinson got involved in a big way against Kearny in the San Diego Section Division II final at the Sports Arena.
Robinson scored 24 points and had 17 rebounds in Madison’s 54-53 victory. Robinson, who is 6-fee 4-inches tall, scored the winning basket on a two-foot shot with 15 seconds remaining.
SOCCER
Valhalla High School won its third consecutive San Diego Section 3-A championship with a 3-1 victory over Torrey Pines, and nobody played a more important role than junior forward Scott Hargrove.
Hargrove, who completed his third year on the Valhalla varsity, had a goal and an assist in both the championship match and the semifinal, a 5-2 victory over Bonita Vista.
The Norsemen finished 23-0-1 and allowed just 10 goals. George Logan, who has coached Valhalla since its first season in 1974, called this year’s team the best in school history.
WRESTLING
Shane Rosselle faced an old foe in the championship match of the 105-pound class at the state tournament. Rosselle, of Poway, and Mike Grubbs, of El Camino, had met five times before the state final. Grubbs, a junior, had won three of the matches, including the Masters title a week before the state tournament.
Rosselle, however, turned the tables on Grubbs. Rosselle scored a two-point takedown with nine seconds remaining in the match to pull out a 6-5 victory.
