Knickerbocker News to Fold on April 16 After 145 Years
ALBANY, N.Y. — The 145-year-old Knickerbocker News, the city’s afternoon newspaper, has lost its fight to stay alive and will publish its last edition April 16.
The Knickerbocker News will be combined with its sister newspaper, the larger morning Times Union, and will carry that paper’s flag. Both newspapers are owned by the privately held Hearst Corp. and operated by Capital Newspapers.
The surprise, four-paragraph announcement, issued shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, shocked reporters and editors. The statement made mention of layoffs, but no figures were given.
The first edition of the Albany Knickerbocker, forerunner of today’s Knickerbocker News, was published on Sept. 4, 1843, by Hugh Hastings, a native of Ireland. In 1928, the Gannett Co. bought the paper from Hastings who had chosen the name Knickerbocker because of the area’s strong Dutch heritage.
