Veteran film composer Lionel Newman will head up MGM/UA Communications’ music department with a title of senior vice president, music, it was announced Thursday. Newman spent 45 years at 20th Century Fox, where he rose to become senior vice president of the music department before retiring, temporarily, in 1987. The father of pop singer/songwriter Randy Newman, he wrote, supervised and conducted the scores for more than 200 films. He was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning a best musical adaptation Oscar in 1969 for “Hello Dolly.”

Film composer Lionel Newman is singer-composer Randy Newman’s uncle. He was mistakenly identified as his father in a news item in Friday’s Calendar.
