Mason’s Comic Truth
Of course, we all know Lawrence Christon is on the cutting edge of comedy criticism, but it seems he’s gone over the edge (“For Mason, ‘Sneak’ Preview Is Deja Vu ,†Feb. 16).
Does he now claim to see into the hearts and minds of Jackie Mason’s Jewish audience to divine that its response is “closer to truth than fictionâ€? (“For 40 years your wife tells you she’s tired. She’s Jewish. What is she tired from?â€)
Were there also blacks and gays in the audience whose response was such that Christon determined the black and gay jibes were closer to the truth than fiction?
What about Gentile response to Gentile cracks? Were they also, in Christon’s prescient opinion, closer to truth than fiction?
Christon’s outrageous comment smacks of not-so-subtle anti-Semitism.
