Roundup : Free Throw Success Carries San Marcos

A 32-of-38 performance from the free-throw line helped San Marcos to a 74-71 comeback victory over Ramona Tuesday night in an Avocado League game at San Marcos.

San Marcos (6-12 overall, 6-7 in league play) trailed through most of the first half but hit 14 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter for the victory. Shawn Sweitzer led San Marcos with 20 points, including 10 in the fourth period. Matti Barrick, who finished with 18 points, was 12 of 12 from the line.

Jason McClenaghan scored 19 points for Ramona (13-14, 8-5).

El Camino 69, Oceanside 49--Lee Cobb had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 5 El Camino (19-4, 12-1) past Oceanside (12-10, 8-5). Steve Carr added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and 8 rebounds for host El Camino.

Escondido 65, Carlsbad 39--Escondido’s Paul Baldwin scored 18 points, Chris Heintschel 13 and Greg Feik added 11 rebounds and 8 points for No. 8 Escondido (17-6, 10-3).

PALOMAR Mt. Carmel 84, San Dieguito 58--Visiting Mt. Carmel (14-9, 6-5) took control in the first half, hitting 66% of its field goals and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line for a 43-27 lead. Eric Olander had 16 points for Mt. Carmel. San Dieguito is 9-14 and 3-8.

Fallbrook 70, Orange Glen 59--Mike West had 22 points, 10 steals and 7 assists for Fallbrook (12-12, 5-6). Orange Glen is 6-19 and 0-11.

GROSSMONT Santana 66, El Capitan 40--Santana’s trapping defense forced several turnovers and limited visiting El Capitan to nine points in the middle two periods. Stu Back scored 22 points and Joe Church 21 for No. 7 Santana (20-2, 14-1). El Capitan is 6-16 and 4-12.

Valhalla 76, Monte Vista 58--Rafid Kiti scored 23 points as No. 9 Valhalla (15-6, 13-2) opened an 11-point first quarter lead and never trailed. Jeff Collins had 15 for visiting Monte Vista (10-11, 7-8).

Mount Miguel 50, Grossmont 49--Grossmont (11-12, 7-9) rallied from a five-point halftime deficit but lost when Lance Williams, the game’s top scorer with 22, missed a desperation 45-foot shot at the buzzer. For Mount Miguel (9-12, 7-8), Anthony Rivera had 14 points.

Granite Hills 107, El Cajon Valley 67--Despite 25 points by Kevin Davis and 24 by Jim Gordon, El Cajon Valley (1-20, 0-15) couldn’t stay with visiting Granite Hills (13-7, 8-7).

GIRLS GROSSMONT Santana 70, El Capitan 32--Leslie Ellis had 25 points and 10 rebounds as No. 1 Santana (21-1, 15-0) won. Melissa Hadfield scored 11 for El Capitan (9-10, 6-8).
