Secretary of State George P. Shultz will meet with noted Soviet dissident Andrei D. Sakharov on his trip to Moscow next weekend to underline U.S. support for the human rights movement, his spokesman said today.

“Human rights is high on his agenda,†State Department spokesman Charles E. Redman said. “Mr. Sakharov obviously is a person well-placed to talk about these kinds of issues.â€

Shultz will hold wide-ranging talks Sunday with Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze, then meet with General Secretary Mikhail S. Gorbachev and Shevardnadze again on Monday.

Sakharov, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975, is a physicist who helped develop the Soviet hydrogen bomb in the 1950s. His subsequent outspoken support for human rights and opposition to the Afghanistan invasion led to his banishment to the closed city of Gorky for six years.
