Japan’s controversial killing of whales in the Antarctic will continue despite a vote against the hunt by the International Whaling Commission, government officials said in Tokyo. “We have no intention of suspending the research whaling,†said Takashi Sato, minister of agriculture, forestries and fishing. Japan has agreed to abide by a ban on commercial whaling, but contends that the killing of 300 minke whales is for scientific research. The London-based whaling commission announced that its 33 active members voted by mail, 19 to 6, to urge Japan to stop its whaling.
