Local News in Brief : Killer Escapes and Gloats
A prison escapee who was serving time for killing a Pasadena journalist may be in the Kingman, Ariz., area, officials at the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi said Wednesday.
Law enforcement authorities in the Kingman area were notified Tuesday to be on the lookout for Vincent Motley, 27, who apparently donned a prison guard’s uniform and drove out of the facility in a prison vehicle Monday.
“Motley telephoned a guard at the prison Tuesday to gloat about his escape,†prison spokesman Lt. Jim Gamboa said. “He told the guard he was in Kingman, but we don’t know whether or not he was lying.â€
Motley reportedly said he wore a guard’s uniform to escape.
“He told the guard that he had collected parts of the uniform over a long period of time,†Gamboa said. “We probably won’t know if he was telling the truth until he is caught and we question him further.â€
Motley was sent to the prison in 1980 to serve a 27-year-to-life term for the 1979 slaying of his neighbor, Robert Engen, 43, a copy editor for the Pasadena Star-News.
