Local News in Brief : Spill Closes Busy Road

A spill of up to 500 gallons of a highly flammable fuel closed for 12 hours a mile-long stretch of heavily traveled road linking downtown Los Angeles to eastern Los Angeles County suburbs, authorities said Wednesday.
Mission Road in Alhambra was sealed off between Fremont Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, when the spill was discovered, Police Lt. Robert Smith said. “Thousands of people were detoured by this,” he said.
The Los Angeles County Hazardous Materials team cleaned the road through the night, reopening it at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Lt. Rockey Caringello said.
“They think it might have been diesel fuel,” he said. “We don’t have any leads on who spilled the fuel or who did the dumping.”
Mission, a four-lane road, winds east out of downtown Los Angeles and feeds the cities of Alhambra, Rosemead and El Monte.
