Local News in Brief : Recycling Project Expected to Raise Funds for Pierce College
About 750 Woodland Hills homes have been targeted for the first phase of an experimental curb-side trash recycling project that will raise money for Pierce College, community leaders said Tuesday.
Portions of three neighborhoods will be visited by recycling trucks on Feb. 20, said Robert Gross, a vice president of the sponsoring Woodland Hill Homeowners Organization.
They include the College Acres subdivision bounded by Calvert Street, Winnetka Avenue, Martha Street and Corbin Avenue and the Girard tract area bounded by Costanzo Street, Canoga Avenue, Dumetz Road and Alhama Drive, Gross said.
Pickups will also be staged in the Carleton Terrace subdivision on Aetna Street, Exhibit Court, Exhibit Place, Oxnard Street, Oso Street and Clark Street, he said.
Homeowners in those three areas will receive a mailer describing the project from the Sylmar recycling company handling the pickups. A few days before the pickup, reminder notices will be placed on doorknobs, Gross said.
Sponsors of the program say it is the first independent curb-side recycling effort ever attempted in the San Fernando Valley.
Additional neighborhoods will be added to the program in coming weeks, Gross said. The aluminium, plastic and paper pickups are expected to raise $45 a ton for the Foundation for Pierce College, he said.
