Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : City OKs Plan to Boost Voter Registration Rolls

The City Council on Monday approved a plan aimed at improving the city’s voter-registration rate, which is the lowest in Orange County.

Registration forms will be distributed by city employees who have frequent contact with residents, such as in the parks and recreation, police and finance departments. Details of the program remain to be worked out, but the idea is to make registration easier for people who would otherwise remain outside the process, according to Councilman Miguel Pulido, who proposed the program.

Pulido said the program was modeled after a similar one in San Antonio, Tex. It was developed after a National League of Cities meeting last year at which league executives asked cities to become more active in registering voters.

Only 30% of Santa Ana’s 226,000 residents were registered to vote as of November--a full 10 percentage points behind Stanton, the city with the second-lowest rate, and 36 points behind the highest, Seal Beach.
