An aftershock of November’s destructive Imperial Valley earthquakes rattled Southern California near the Mexican border Wednesday but caused only minor damage, authorities said.

The quake, which struck at 6:54 p.m. and registered 4.8 on the Richter scale, was one of thousands of aftershocks that have occurred since earthquakes measuring 6.2 and a 6.6 hit the county last November, seismologists at Caltech said.

The epicenter was 11 miles northwest of El Centro.

Police reported only minor damage in the tiny city of Imperial, and there were no reports of injuries. Part of a wall on a commercial building collapsed, and a pipe carrying ammonia at a chemical company broke.
