Firefighters Go on Strike in Dublin
DUBLIN, Ireland — Firefighters went on strike in Dublin on Friday for the first time in 20 years, and specially trained soldiers handled emergency calls.
Talks aimed at resolving the dispute between the 800 firefighters and the city broke down early Friday. The dispute is over staffing levels, training and what the firefighters’ unions allege are breaches of wage agreements by the city council.
In the past three weeks, 300 soldiers have undergone training in fighting fires and other emergency services at a military base in County Kildare, southwest of Dublin.
