Local News in Brief : Tustin : Fire Sparked in Fixture--Damage Is $170,000
A fire that apparently started in a kitchen light fixture swept through two units of a 115-unit apartment complex, causing $170,000 damage, officials said.
Two families in the units were evacuated, said county Fire Department spokeswoman Patti Range. Three units above the fire were also damaged by smoke Thursday night.
The fire was reported at 7:08 p.m. in a ground-floor apartment in the 14000 block of Newport Avenue, Range said. The fire started when a fluorescent light fixture in the kitchen apparently overheated, and flames quickly spread to the apartment unit next door.
Within 22 minutes, firefighters had the two-alarm blaze under control, Range said.
The Red Cross housed the two families for the night. Firefighter John Avila was treated for a strained calf muscle at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and released, Range said.
