Zoe Haas of Switzerland was declared winner of a women’s World Cup super giant slalom at Lech am Arlberg, Austria, after Sigrid Wolf and three other Austrians were disqualified.
Wolf won the race in 1 minute 15.51 seconds, but West Germany protested that Wolf and other Austrians used safety pins rather than string to fasten the starting numbers on their ski suits, giving them an aerodynamic advantage. Officials upheld the protest.
Haas was timed in 1:15.55, just .20 ahead of Catherine Quittet of France. Michela Figini of Switzerland was timed in 1:15.79 and held her World Cup lead with 121 points, 20 more than Blanca Fernandez-Ochoa of Spain.
