Donny Lalonde to Defend WBC Title

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Donny Lalonde, the World Boxing Council light-heavyweight champion, has agreed to defend his title in April against Leslie Stewart in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Stewart, the former World Boxing Assn. light-heavyweight champion, is a native of Port of Spain.
Lalonde, a Winnipeg native, says he is enthusiastic about the fight. He won his title in November, defeating Eddie Davis.
Stewart signed to fight the winner of the Lalonde-Davis bout but promoters of a Feb. 28 fight in Port of Spain failed to make the proper financial arrangements and get WBC approval.
“The WBC has been behind Danny all the way,” said Lalonde’s manager, David Wolf. “I won’t do anything to upset them.”
Lalonde said Wolf renegotiated the contract, although it hasn’t yet been signed.
“We have, in effect, agreed to the fight,” he said.
“I’m happy with the terms.”
