San Diego Sports et Cetera : Hinz Hits Them All in AIA’s Win
Gib Hinz made 13 of 13 shots for 26 points as Athletes In Action defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 86-69, Friday night at Los Angeles.
Hinz, a 7-foot center, set an AIA record for shooting percentage. He also had 20 rebounds.
Zack Jones added 18 points for AIA (17-8), which is based in Carlsbad. Reid Gettys added 14 points and Mark Gottfried 12.
Ken Horton led Los Angeles (2-7) with 25 points.
AIA made 54% of its shots while CSLA shot only 37%. AIA plays tonight at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Kevin Stewart scored 20 points to lead UC San Diego to a 90-71 victory over San Francisco’s Simpson College in the first round of the La Jolla tournament at UCSD’s Triton Pavilion.
UCSD (7-4) will play Cal Lutheran (5-7) in the finals at 8 tonight.
Blake Miraglia scored 20 points to lead Cal Lutheran past Western Connecticut State, 89-87.
John Griffin scored with three seconds remaining in overtime to lift Biola University to a 68-66 victory over Point Loma Nazarene in the Point Loma Nazarene tournament. Griffin finished with 21 points for Biola (14-0), ranked No. 4 among NAIA schools. Point Loma (4-8) was led by Jim Hill’s 18 points.
HOCKEY
Brent Mowery’s eight-foot slap shot at the 3:45 mark of the third period gave United States International University a 5-3 victory over Merrimack College (Andover, Mass.) at the San Diego Ice Arena.
The loss ended a 21-game winning streak for Merrimack (16-1), which dated from Feb. 14, 1987.
Troy Coulson clinched the game for USIU (10-11) when he scored on a power play at 11:03 in the third period. Merrimack’s Jim Hrivnak had 30 saves.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Shannon Anderson scored 23 points in Point Loma Nazarene College’s 68-58 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the Whittier tournament at Whittier College.
Point Loma led, 32-29, at halftime, but San Bernardino trailed by just one, 56-55, with four minutes to play. Lisa Mowday then made three baskets in a row to put Point Loma (8-4) ahead for good.
Point Loma outrebounded San Bernardino, 50-33. Jenone Bell and Sayori Baldwin scored 14 each for San Bernardino.
Holly Ingersoll scored 13 points as Azusa Pacific (5-3) defeated UC San Diego, 53-50, at Azusa Pacific. Tracy Ragatz led UCSD with 16 points. Jill Koster added 12 for UCSD (4-9).
