Local News in Brief : Countywide : Ferguson in New Attack on Freeway Lane Size
Another attack on the small lanes of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway was made Friday by state Assemblyman Gil Ferguson (R-Newport Beach).
The lanes “created a clear and present danger to Orange County motorists,†Ferguson said in a letter to county transportation officials. The lanes were made narrower to accommodate car-pool lanes and a freeway-widening project.
Ferguson’s letter followed complaints last week from the Irvine-based Drivers for Highway Safety. The group said its tests showed that the lanes are as narrow as eight feet in some places despite Caltrans’ claims that the lanes are 10 feet wide.
