Tennis Roundup : Shriver to Meet Novotna for Brisbane Title Today

Top-seeded Pam Shriver routed third-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, 6-4, 6-0, Saturday to advance to the final of a $150,000 women’s tennis tournament at Brisbane, Australia.

Shriver faces 19-year-old Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia for the title today. Novotna downed unseeded Patty Fendick, a two-time NCAA champion, 7-5, 6-1.

Shriver demolished Kohde-Kilsch in 55 minutes, serving six aces. “I didn’t do much wrong and when I served a couple of aces in a row, that just put everything away,†said Shriver, who has a 2-0 record against Novotna.

At Wellington, New Zealand, fourth-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union fought off match point and went on to beat Chris Pridham of Canada, 4-6, 6-3, 9-7, to reach the final of the $115,000 New Zealand Open.

Pridham held a match point in the 12th game of the final set and later accused Chesnokov of “quick serving†him on that crucial point.

“I wasn’t ready for it,†Pridham said. “I looked up, and the ball was right there. If I’d had more time, I think I could have played it.â€

Asked about the incident, Chesnokov merely shrugged and said, “Of course.â€

In the other semifinal, sixth-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India took only 58 minutes to defeat No. 2 Kelly Evernden of New Zealand, 6-3, 6-1.
