SportsScope : Klein and Milburn Win Top All-Star Honors for Great Prep Grid Seasons

Palisades High School quarterback Perry Klein and Santa Monica High tailback Glyn Milburn won top honors on all-star teams selected by the First Interstate Bank-Amateur Athletic Foundation Board of Sportswriters.

Klein was named the Los Angeles City 3-A player of the year by a unanimous vote. Milburn was selected on the All-CIF Southern Section team and shared Southern Conference player of the year honors with El Toro High quarterback Bret Johnson.

Palisades placed four other players on the All-City 3-A first teams: wide receivers Harold Champion and Robert Scott, defensive lineman Dion Beckton and linebacker-running back Louis Randall on defense. Hamilton linebacker-running back Charles McKinzie was picked on the defensive team.

Santa Monica offensive lineman Kevin Kelly joined Milburn on the All-Southern Section and All-Southern Conference first teams, and Beverly Hills linebacker-running back Willie Crawford was a repeat selection as All-Southern Conference, this year on defense. St. Bernard wide receiver Eric Nelson was a choice for the All-Big Five Conference first team.

Four Westchester High players made the All-City 2-A first team: offensive lineman Fred Rodgers, running back Kevin Owens, defensive lineman Kevin Johnson and linebacker Thomas Reese. Other 2-A first-team selections included Venice wide receiver Chris Staib and University defensive lineman Mike Davis.

Westchester High sprinter Marlon Singleton is an alternate in the 60-yard dash in the high school section of the Sunkist Invitational indoor track meet. The meet will be held the evening of Jan. 22 at the Sports Arena. Singleton has run the 100-meter dash in 10.96 and a wind-aided 10.84.

The Pepperdine women’s swim team (2-1) will play host to Oregon State at noon Saturday at Raleigh Runnels Pool.

The Waves have defeated Claremont Mudd and Pomona Pitzer and lost to Cal State Long Beach. Pepperdine has been led by swimmers Chris Carrauthers, Jennifer Gutierrez and Jerryl Reed and diver Bridget Kenehan.

Rebecca Wright, 16, of Venice High School has qualified for the U. S. Fencing Assn. Junior Olympic National Championships, which will be held Feb. 13-15 in Cleveland. Wright, who will compete in foil for women under 20, trained with Theodore Katzoff, director of the Westside Fencing Center in Culver City, under a grant from the Amateur Athletic Foundation from 1984 Olympics surplus funds.

Brandy Page and Sabina Varis, both of Pacific Palisades, and Melissa Voyagis of Brentwood each took first place in their divisions at the Silk Purse Horse Trials in Las Vegas. Page won a blue ribbon in the junior novice division, Varis in junior training and Voyagis for riders 12 and younger.

Al Constantineau shot a 37 for nine holes to win the A flight in the Penmar Men’s Golf Club’s December tournament. Other flight winners and their gross scores: Pete Vaughn, B, 37; Jay Midkiff, C, 43; Wayne Ballinger, D, 43, and Charles McIlrath, temporary handicaps, 41.
