Brentwood : Drive to Preserve Mart Begins

Brentwood residents have started a petition drive to obtain historical status for the Brentwood Country Mart, a series of shops and restaurants which opened for business in 1948.

The petition drive was launched despite assurances from the owner of the property, Topa Management Co., that the firm has no intention of demolishing the shopping center.

Sponsors of the petition, the Save the Mart Committee, say that there is a threat that at least part of the Country Mart may be destroyed and replaced by an office building or supermarket. Committee members say they are concerned because all of the merchants’ leases expire at the same time next summer.
