THE PREPS : Marina-Fountain Valley Boys’ Soccer Tournament : Strong Half Lifts Palos Verdes, 2-0

Palos Verdes High School scored two goals in the first half to defeat Marina, 2-0, for the championship of the Marina-Fountain Valley boys’ soccer tournament Wednesday at Marina High School.

The Sea Kings’ first score came 15 minutes into the first half on a shot by Paul Kaemerer. Rich Van Doren scored the other goal on a penalty kick.

Goalie Danny Phillips, who replaced Graham Harrison in the second half, had seven saves to seal the victory for Palos Verdes (11-2-2), which defeated Marina by a 2-0 score for the second time in two weeks.

Marina, which came into the tournament 2-6-1 and is now 6-7-1, threatened several times in the second half. Midway through the half, Darrin Fishman scored, but the goal was disallowed because of an offsides call.

“I’m delighted that we made it to the championship game,†said Marina Coach Dave McLeish, the tournament coordinator. “We have a very young team, and we’re really coming along.â€

Both Marina and Palos Verdes are dominated by juniors.

“Our kids are very fast and hustle to the ball,†said Alan King, the Palos Verdes coach.

He praised defender Leo Lundy’s ability to stop Fishman, who scored the Vikings’ three goals in two victories Tuesday.

He also praised Marina fullback Mike Lapper, who continued to get the ball to his teammates, though they were unable to score.

In the third-place match:

Simi Valley 2, Saddleback 1 (OT)--Saddleback took a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Carlos Zavala, his ninth of the tournament. But Simi Valley (10-2-1) tied it in the second half on a penalty kick by Jeff Sprach and won when John Simmons scored in overtime. Goalie Miguel Ochoa had 12 saves for Saddleback (8-5-1).

In consolation matches:

Mission Viejo 4, Capistrano Valley 2--Jeff Jurgemeyer scored two goals in the first half to give the Diablos a 2-1 halftime lead. Todd Patrick and Greg Morales scored in the second half for Mission Viejo (8-3). Mike Gilmore and Tony Blate scored for Capistrano Valley (9-4-2).

Edison 2, Huntington Beach 0--Andy Strouse paced the Chargers with two goals, one in each half.

Bishop Montgomery 1, Katella 0--The Knights sustained their first loss and are now 7-1-2.
