COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Community College Roundup : Ingram Leads Saddleback to Victory
Sophomore guard Renny Ingram scored 20 points, 14 in the second half, to lead Saddleback College to a 61-56 victory over Long Beach Wednesday for the championship of the Rancho Santiago men’s basketball tournament.
Saddleback (12-6) led, 49-46, with 5:30 left when Ingram scored the next seven points.
He made a 10-foot jumper, a three-point shot from the top of the key and a pair of free throws and Saddleback led, 56-46 with 2:10 left to play.
He had made another three-point shot earlier in the half and two in the first half.
“I look for the three-pointer if it’s there,†Ingram said. “Coach (Bill Brummel) says I can put it up so I look for it.â€
Ingram also added a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Ingram and teammate Joe Hudson (15 points) were voted to the all-tournament team. Vincent Smalls (10 points) of Saddleback was voted the tournament’s most valuable player. He led Saddleback with 48 points in the three games.
It was Saddleback’s sixth consecutive victory.
Randy Wise scored 17 points for Long Beach, which led, 42-39, with 10:11 left but scored only 14 points the rest of the game.
