Tennis Roundup : McEnroe to Skip Australian Open

John McEnroe said Wednesday he wouldn’t play in the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year, because of problems stemming from an aggravated back injury.

McEnroe plans to resume playing at Milan, Italy, on Feb. 15. The Australian Open begins Jan. 11.

Fourth-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union downed Australian Brod Dyke, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round of the $93,400 New Zealand Open at Wellington and will meet fifth-seeded Tim Wilkison, who beat Stephen Shaw of Britain, 7-5, 6-3.

Third-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany advanced to the round of 16 in the $150,000 Ariadne women’s tournament at Brisbane, Australia, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anna Maria Fernandez.

Canadian qualifier Jill Hetherington upset eighth-seeded Etsuko Inoue of Japan, 7-6, 6-3.
