Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist postponed a lower court ruling ordering Georgetown University to provide two homosexual rights groups with equal access to campus facilities and services. In a brief order, Rehnquist blocked the effect of a Nov. 20 ruling by the District of Columbia’s highest court requiring the Washington school to “recognize†the two groups until further word from him or the full Supreme Court. In the emergency request appealing the ruling, the school’s lawyers cited its Jesuit roots and religious beliefs. The two groups, Gay People of Georgetown University and the Gay Rights Coalition of Georgetown University Law Center, sued the school in 1980 over official recognition.
