President Reagan imposed duties on about $100 million worth of imports from the European Community but immediately suspended them to see how the EC deals with U.S. meat exports. The President’s action was in line with an announcement he made on Nov. 23 as part of a long-simmering controversy over the EC’s plans to ban the sale or import of meat produced from animals treated with growth hormones based on health considerations. However, the EC voted recently to allow the imports to continue an additional year. In his order formally imposing the duties, Reagan said they would be suspended for as long as the EC does not restrict U.S. meat exports. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said the use of the hormones poses no health hazards.
