Philippine President Corazon Aquino ordered the military to refrain from offensives against Communist guerrillas during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The rebels, in turn, said their fighters would silence their guns on Christmas “as an expression of our good will to the Filipino people.” Christmas is a major religious festival in the Philippines, the only Roman Catholic nation in Asia. Both sides avoided the term cease-fire , a loaded term since a 60-day cease-fire broke down earlier this year.
