Sandinistas Delay Contra Talks
MANAGUA, Nicaragua — The first face-to-face negotiations between representatives of Nicaragua and the U.S.-backed Contra rebels have been postponed at Nicaragua’s request, the official Radio Sandino said today.
The radio said the government sought the postponement of the talks scheduled for today in the Dominican Republic “for technical reasons.†It did not elaborate. Observers said one factor in the postponement may have been revelations by Nicaragua’s leftist Sandinista government this weekend that it is considering a major military buildup.
