College Basketball Roundup : Arizona Slows Down Iowa to Win, 66-59
Lute Olson didn’t want to get run out of town in his return to Iowa City.
So Olson’s fourth-ranked Arizona Wildcats slowed down No. 3 Iowa and knocked off the Hawkeyes, 66-59, Saturday night.
“Our game plan was obvious,†Olson said. “We didn’t think we could run up and down the floor with them. We thought if we could make them play a lot of defense, it might interrupt the flow of their offense.
“The thing that I was pleased with with our guys was our poise late in the game. The way we were able to step up and knock down free throws late in the game.â€
It was Olson’s first game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena since he left the Hawkeyes to take the Arizona job in 1983.
Iowa (6-1) averaged 93 points in its first six games.
“We couldn’t get our running game going,†Iowa Coach Tom Davis said. “They had us back on our heels by changing their defense and it effectively disrupted the offense.â€
Tom Tolbert scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and Steve Kerr added 15 as Arizona (7-0) took a 26-25 halftime lead and nursed it through the second half.
Tolbert made two baskets and the Wildcats scored six straight points to take a 54-47 lead with 4:30 left. Jud Buechler, Craig McMillan and Tolbert made two free throws each in the final minute.
Roy Marble had 16 points and B.J. Armstrong scored 15 for Iowa.
Pitt 70, West Virginia 64--Jason Mathews scored 19 points and sophomore Rod Brookin added 12 as the second-ranked Panthers got past the Mountaineers at Morgantown, W.Va.
The Panthers (4-0) took the lead for good, 50-49, on two free throws by Mathews with 8:50 left. Brookin hit a three-pointer with eight minutes left and a dunk 90 seconds later as Pitt pulled away.
Demetreus Gore and Jerome Lane each added 10 points for Pittsburgh. Darryl Prue scored 21 points for West Virginia (3-2), which had a 36-31 halftime lead.
North Carolina 90, SMU 74--Ranzino Smith scored 10 points in a three-minute span in the second half and the fifth-ranked Tar Heels rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat the Mustangs at Chapel Hill, N.C.
Smith’s jumper with 15:20 left gave North Carolina (5-1) the lead for good, 51-49. Smith added a jumper and two three-pointers to increase the lead to 63-57.
J.R. Reid had 21 points and Smith added 16 for North Carolina. Kato Armstrong scored 20 for SMU (5-1).
Indiana 63, Washington State 56--Keith Smart scored 19 points and the sixth-ranked Hoosiers won their 26th straight home game, downing the Cougars in the championship game of the Indiana tournament at Bloomington, Ind.
The Hoosiers (4-1) took the lead for good with 6:02 to play on a three-pointer by Smart that started a 13-1 run that gave Indiana a 57-47 lead with 2:09 left.
Todd Anderson scored 17 points for Washington State (3-4).
Wyoming 74, Alabama Birmingham 69--Eric Leckner scored 24 points and the No. 7 Cowboys came from 13 points down to beat the Blazers at Birmingham, Ala.
Alabama Birmingham (4-3) had a 16-3 lead six minutes into the game, but made only 9 of 20 foul shots in the half as the Cowboys (4-0) rallied for a 35-35 tie. Wyoming started the second half with a 7-1 run and never trailed again.
Syracuse 92, Canisius 77--Derrick Coleman scored 10 straight points early in the second half as the eighth-ranked Orangemen pulled away from the Golden Griffins at Buffalo, N.Y.
Coleman, who had only 5 of his 24 points in the first half, turned two offensive rebounds into three-point plays during his outburst as the Orangemen (6-2) extended a five-point halftime lead to 61-37 early in the second half.
Brian Smith scored 24 points for Canisius (0-4).
Memphis State 76, Missouri 68--Elliot Perry scored 19 points and the 20th-ranked Metro Conference Tigers knocked off the No. 9 Big Eight Tigers at Memphis, Tenn.
Memphis State (4-1) broke away from a 36-36 halftime tie, twice building leads of 11 points in the second half.
Derrick Chievous scored 26 points for Missouri (3-1).
DePaul 73, Notre Dame 69--Kevin Edwards scored 7 of his 17 points in overtime and the Blue Demons beat the 19th-ranked Irish at Rosemont, Ill.
The Blue Demons (4-1) trailed by eight points with 5:21 remaining and were down by six with 1:19 left, but tied the game, 63-63, on a layup by Rod Strickland with 26 seconds left in regulation.
Strickland scored 21 points for DePaul. David Rivers had 26 for Notre Dame (3-2).
Temple 75, Rhode Island 66--Mike Vreeswyk scored 26 points and Mark Macon added 19 as the 11th-ranked Owls rallied to beat the Rams in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Philadelphia.
Rhode Island (4-1) had a 37-30 lead early in the second half, but Temple (4-0) scored the next seven points to tie the score, and then outscored the Rams, 19-6, for a 56-43 advantage with 9:40 left.
Nevada Las Vegas 89, Houston 69--Gerald Paddio scored 27 points, including seven three-point shots, and the No. 17 Runnin’ Rebels outgunned the Cougars at Houston.
Las Vegas (5-0) made 11 of 22 shots from three-point range.
Rolando Ferreira scored 23 points for Houston (3-1).
Florida 71, Florida State 48--Vernon Maxwell scored 16 points and the 12th-ranked Gators routed the Seminoles at Gainesville, Fla.
Florida State (3-2) got within 47-41 with 10:07 left but was outscored, 24-7, the rest of the way.
Dwayne Schintzius added 14 points for Florida (5-1).
Oklahoma 152, Centenary 84--Harvey Grant had 30 points and 15 rebounds, and Mookie Blaylock made an NCAA-record 12 steals as the No. 16 Sooners overwhelmed the Gentlemen (3-4) at Norman, Okla.
The Sooners (6-0) neared the Division I single-game record of 164 points, set by Nevada Las Vegas against Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 19, 1976, and broke the school mark of 133.
Kansas 110, Rider 72--Danny Manning had 30 points and 14 rebounds as the No. 18 Jayhawks overpowered the Broncos at Lawrence, Kan.
The Jayhawks (6-2) ran their homecourt winning streak to 52 games as Manning made 14 of 16 field goal attempts.
Georgetown 78, St. Leo 40--Jaren Jackson scored all 16 of his points in the first half and the No. 14 Hoyas rolled past the Monarchs at Landover, Md.
Anthony Tucker added 13 points for Georgetown (4-1), which beat St. Leo by 75 points last season.
Michigan 115, Eastern Michigan 63--Gary Grant had 33 points and 13 assists as the No. 15 Wolverines routed the Hurons at Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Wolverines (7-1) went on a 38-10 run during the last 9:29 of the first half to build a 66-27 lead at intermission, when Grant had 24 points and 11 assists.
Glen Rice added 25 points and Sean Higgins had 20 for the Wolverines.
Purdue 96, Ball State 47--Everette Stephens scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half as the 13th-ranked Boilermakers trounced the Cardinals at West Lafayette, Ind.
Todd Mitchell added 14 points for Purdue (6-1).
Stanford 68, USF 67--Todd Lichti scored 19 points, including a pair of free throws in the final minute, and the Cardinal held off the Dons at San Francisco.
Stanford (5-2) had a 51-38 lead with 11:42 remaining, but the Dons (4-2) got back in it with a 12-5 run. Mark McCathrion and Rodney Tention had 16 points each for USF.
