Lutheran Bishop Resigns Over Dispute

CHICAGO — The Chicago-area bishop of the new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has resigned, citing factional infighting in the church.
The Rev. John H. Tietjen, 59, announced his resignation after the 20-member Metro Chicago Synod Council rejected Tietjen’s second nominee to serve as the bishop’s administrative assistant.
The rejection was the reason for his resignation, Tietjen said in a statement to the 140,000 members of the denomination’s 252 congregations in the synod’s jurisdiction.
A new bishop will be elected at a special meeting to be held in Chicago on Jan. 9, said Carol Smith, communications director of the new Lutheran church.
