The World : 60 Missing in Andes Slide
Up to 60 people were missing and feared dead after an avalanche roared into an Andean valley outside Santiago, burying a workers’ camp and a picnic area, Chilean government television said. Two bodies were recovered, both several miles from the workers’ camp. Authorities said dozens of people were injured when snow, rocks and mud swept down the mountainside. By dusk, scores of people had been evacuated by rescue crews and helicopters, but about 200 were still stranded. Police blocked the only road from Santiago to the Los Maitenes area about 45 miles away and urged people to leave, saying a new avalanche could occur.
