Troy Aikman, the UCLA quarterback who passed for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns, and Arizona safety Chuck Cecil were named Pacific 10 Conference football players of the year Tuesday.

USC’s Larry Smith, whose Trojans upset UCLA, 17-13, Saturday to earn the Rose Bowl berth, was selected as coach of the year.

The season’s awards were determined by the votes of Pac-10 coaches and announced by Commissioner Thomas Hansen.

The 1987 all-conference team includes seven UCLA players. Terry Tumey, the UCLA nose guard, earned All-Pac-10 honors for the third consecutive season. Cecil was among seven other players named all-conference for a second time.

The Rose Bowl-bound Trojans had only three first-team selections--running back Steven Webster, tight end Paul Green and offensive lineman Dave Cadigan. Six USC players made the second team.

Derek Hill of Arizona was named a first-team wide receiver and second-team kick return specialist.

Aikman, a junior, is the second-ranked passer nationally in college football. He completed 159 of 243 passes and was intercepted only 6 times. Others receiving votes for offensive player of the year were USC quarterback Rodney Peete and UCLA tailback Gaston Green.

Cecil, a senior, began his Arizona career as a walk-on player. With one game remaining, he has eight interceptions this season and a career total of 20, which ties the Pac-10 record. Also receiving defensive player of the year votes were Carnell Lake and Ken Norton of UCLA and Shawn Patterson of Arizona State.

Smith took over the USC football program this year after seven years as Arizona’s head coach. His first Trojan team finished the regular season 8-3 and had a 7-1 conference record.
