San Diego Sports Et cetera : San Diego St. to Play Southern Methodist in Midwest Regional of Soccer Playoffs

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego State soccer team will face Southern Methodist University at Dallas at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Midwest Regional of the NCAA Division I soccer playoffs.
The Aztecs (17-5), rated 20th in the nation, defeated the University of St. Louis Sunday, 2-1, in the playoffs’ first round. No. 5 SMU (13-3-1) had a first-round bye.
FOOTBALL
The first round of the San Diego Section High School football playoffs begin Friday night. All games are at 7:30.
In the 3-A division: Patrick Henry (4-5) at Fallbrook (7-3), winner meeting top-seeded Mt. Miguel (10-0) next week; Orange Glen (6-3-1) at Chula Vista (6-1-3), winner plays No. 2 Point Loma (10-0); San Dieguito (6-4) at Helix (7-2-1), winner plays No. 3 Mt. Carmel (8-1); Granite Hills (5-5) at Morse (7-3), winner plays No. 4 Sweetwater (8-2).
In the 2-A division: El Camino (5-5) at University of San Diego High School (9-1), winner plays at No. 1 Lincoln (8-2) next week; Oceanside (4-4-2) at Coronado (7-3), winner plays at No. 2 La Jolla; San Marcos (4-4-2) at Christian (6-4), winner plays at No. 3 El Capitan (6-4); Crawford (6-4) at Mar Vista (7-3), winner plays at No. 4 San Pasqual (5-5).
Each seeded team has a bye in the first round.
