Writer Yuri Polyakov of the Soviet Union blames Soviet backwardness on “Flaws of the Cult of One Personality” (Op-Ed Page, Nov. 2) as opposed to the inherent “nature” of the socialist system.
But how can a system that idolizes government as a solution to all our problems help but project as a cult figure the person chosen to head that government?
The role of the Gorbachev personality in current Soviet politics belies Polyakov’s assertion that the “tradition” has ended.
