Community College Roundup : Golden West Sweeps in Volleyball
Setter Barrie Dafforn had 6 kills and 24 assists to lead Golden West College to a 15-2, 15-7, 15-1 victory over Mt. San Antonio in a South Coast League women’s volleyball match Wednesday at Mt. SAC.
Outside hitter Laura Phillips added seven kills to help the Rustlers (20-1 overall, 9-0 in league play) to the victory. Golden West is ranked No. 1 in the state.
In Orange-Empire women’s volleyball:
Citrus 3, Saddleback 1--The Gauchos (3-10, 1-6) lost, 10-15, 15-4, 15-12, 15-13. Saddleback’s Amy Vanderpool had 19 kills and 7 blocks. Wendy Hamilton added 16 kills and 11 blocks for Saddleback. Citrus is 13-1 and 7-0.
Rancho Santiago 3, Riverside 2--The Dons (7-6, 4-3) overcame a two-game deficit and rallied to win at Riverside, 9-15, 8-15, 15-12, 15-11, 17-15. Mona Kort led Rancho Santiago with 14 kills. Karen Hiebert had five service aces.
Orange Coast 3, Cypress 0--Karen Nickel had 10 kills to lead the Pirates to a 15-5, 15-6, 18-16 victory at home. Jody Fee had 4 blocks and 7 digs and Gina Tucci had 17 assists to help OCC to the win. Cypress is 1-6 in conference.
In Western State Conference wrestling:
Rio Hondo 24, Cypress 15--Scott Schumm, rated No. 1 in the state at 161 pounds, led Rio Hondo (10-0, 4-0) to the victory at Cypress. Schumm (18-0) defeated Jim Devorr, 12-7. Cypress (8-1, 3-1) was led by Frank Trujillo, rated No. 1 in the state at 129. Trujillo (20-2) pinned Rick Macias.
