Southern Section Volleyball : Newport Harbor Sweeps Past Culver City

Senior middle blocker Anastasia Arnold had 13 kills and 6 blocks and Jenny Evans had 13 kills and 4 blocks to lead Newport Harbor High School over Culver City, 15-6, 15-6, 15-3, in a Southern Section 5-A girls’ volleyball quarterfinal match Tuesday at Culver City.
Sienna Curci had 40 assists, Becky Sherwood had 6 kills and 2 service aces and Kirsten Conklin had 5 blocks for Newport Harbor.
Newport Harbor (16-0), the top-seeded 5-A team, plays Woodbridge Thursday in one semifinal.
In other 5-A matches:
Woodbridge 3, St. Joseph 1--Woodbridge (13-3) won at home, 15-4, 7-15, 15-8, 15-8.
Corona del Mar 3, Mater Dei 2--Laurie Sawin had 28 kills and Laurie Wooten had 24 to lead Corona del Mar to a 7-15, 15-5, 15-5, 15-17, 15-9 victory at Mater Dei in a match that lasted 2 1/2 hours.
Kim Linden had five service aces for Corona del Mar (20-2), which plays Mira Costa in one semifinal Thursday.
Mater Dei ends the season 12-4.
In 4-A quarterfinals:
Irvine 3, Esperanza 1--Kim Oden and Cari Delson had 12 kills each to lead Irvine at home. Irvine, the South Coast League champion and the fourth-seeded team in the 4-A, won 15-1, 15-8, 13-15, 15-3.
Haley Orme had six kills for Irvine (14-2), which plays Marymount in one semifinal Thursday.
Marymount 3, Marina 0--Marymount (17-1) defeated Marina, 15-9, 15-10, 15-3, at Marymount. Marina, the second-place team from the Sunset League, ends 11-6.
Long Beach Wilson 3, Edison 0--Heather Jensen had nine kills and four service aces for Edison (15-4), which lost at Wilson, 15-11, 15-12, 15-4. Aimee Achenback had six kills and six blocks for Edison.
