Italians voted overwhelmingly against expansion of the country’s nuclear power program in a national referendum inspired by last year’s Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union. Final returns showed majorities of about 80% in favor of abrogating laws that were essential to further progress in Italy’s fledgling nuclear energy program. The vote on three measures gives Italy’s president 120 days to abolish current laws regulating site selection for nuclear plants, subsidy payments to communities that host the facilities and Italian participation in atomic projects abroad.
