Michelob Track Meet to Be Moved Outdoors

SAN DIEGO — The Michelob Invitational track meet, which has been held indoors for 21 years, will be held outdoors at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium in 1988, said race chairman Al Franken Monday.
The race will be held June 25 on a new $400,000 track at the downtown San Diego stadium, Franken said.
The race was moved outdoors to secure a national television agreement on June 25, thereby giving the meet additional funds to attract more world-class athletes. Also, the meet will be held three weeks before the 1988 U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials.
The invitational meet traditionally has been held the third week in February. That, however, would have placed the event in conflict with the 1988 Winter Olympics, with no opportunity for television coverage.
Plans call for an indoor meet at the Sports Arena in 1989.
