11th Game Adjourned; Kasparov Holds Edge

SEVILLE, Spain — The 11th game of the world chess championship was adjourned Monday with titleholder Gary Kasparov holding a good chance to win after a blunder by challenger Anatoly Karpov.

The score in the match after 10 games was tied at 5-5, and a victory would give Kasparov a lead in the 24-game match.

Karpov, playing white, had built a strong advantage, but he blundered away a rook for a bishop with a weak 35th move.

“It was a fantastically bad mistake,” commented Soviet grandmaster Mark Taimanov. “Now, Karpov is losing.”
