Malibu will soon be getting its first new beachfront motel in more than 35 years.
The Tonga Lei Motel, a beach mainstay for more than two decades, will be torn down along with the Don the Beachcomber restaurant to make way for a $7-million, three-story, 47-room motel--the Malibu Beach Inn--scheduled to open next summer.
The Polynesian restaurant, a favorite hangout of Pepperdine University students, is scheduled to be bulldozed later this month. The motel, which opened in 1961, will be razed in early December.
