S. Korean Police Fire Tear Gas to End Student Protest

SEOUL, South Korea — Police fired tear gas Friday at Seoul National University to disperse about 1,000 students hurling firebombs and rocks. The violence broke out after a rally to demand formation of a neutral interim government to ensure the honesty of next month’s presidential elections.
About 500 students clashed with police at Yonsei University after police seized six students collecting signatures to back the demand for an interim government. Students threw gasoline bombs at a police bus, setting it aflame. Clashes also broke out at Hankuk University in Seoul, and nonviolent rallies were reported at three other schools.
