Pacific Coast League : Woodbridge Uses Balance to Remain Undefeated

Woodbridge High School passed when it could and ran when it had to Thursday night to remain undefeated with a 26-6 victory over Orange in a Pacific Coast League football game in front of 300 at Irvine High School.

After passing for 101 yards in the first half, the Warriors turned cautious by keeping the ball on the ground through the final two quarters. Both strategies were effective.

“I wasn’t sure if it was going to rain, so we had to throw the ball while it was still dry,” Woodbridge Coach Gene Noji said. “If I knew it was going to rain this hard, we would have thrown the ball a lot more. It just got too slippery to throw after halftime.”

Two Corey Pierce field goals put Orange (2-6 overall, 0-4 in league) in front, 6-0, early in the second quarter. However, the Warriors were able to use their passing game to rally.

Quarterback Fred Schweer completed 8 of 11 passes for 88 yards in the first half. He was 9 of 19 for 91 yards for the game.

Schweer drove the Warriors (9-0, 4-0) 73 yards in 9 plays to take the lead with 6:44 left in the second quarter. He completed 3 passes for 47 yards, including a 23-yard pass to Dax Jordan to give Woodbridge a first down on the Orange 7-yard line.

Two plays later, Jimmy Burke scored on a 2-yard run and Keith Boothroyd’s conversion gave Woodbridge a 7-6 lead with 6:44 left in the half.
